That House Behind The Review...
For many years I have drove by this old home near the newspaper office downtown. It is one of the last grand homes of its kind still standing downtown. Known as the Surls house it was probably built around the late 1880's or early 1890's. For years I always wondered what the inside of the home looked like. Though it is nowhere near it's former glory it still has the potential to be restored and offers some very unique views from the inside of East Liverpool.
Recently the home came up for sale and is listed by the Hilbert Agency. Tait Hilbert graciously let some members of the East Liverpool Historical Society go through it and photograph it. All of the original woodwork is intact and in very good condition. Most rooms have ten foot high ceilings and eight foot high doors. All of the original pocket doors are still there and work. It also has a lot of the old stained glass windows popular in that era. Here is some of the views that I saw.
This is an old clay sewer pipe used for the drainage of the downspouts on the house. The stamp on the pipe is of the American Vitrified pipe company down in east end. This was the mine behind Gina's Drive Thru. It was formerly the old Knowles, Taylor, and Anderson mine.

I think Paul & Sherma Gordon used to own this house. I had asked them to tour it, but it was being rented as apartments a that time. Awesome pictures Jeff.

ReplyDeleteThis place was pretty neat. It needs a lot of work and money but it could be done. I was amazed at how nice the wood work was. There are very few places left around town with this kind of wood work. The gas furnace in the basement would literally take up most of my living room so I'm guessing the monthly budget would be a little high. Thank you Tom!
